The reign of dominance continues for Mikey “Darth Rigatoni” Musumeci, who solidified his status as the ONE Flyweight Submission Grappling World Champion in the world’s premier martial arts organization.
In the co-main event of ONE Fight Night 13: Allazov vs. Grigorian, streamed on Prime Video this past Friday, Musumeci showcased his prowess by expertly defending his title against the reigning strawweight MMA champion, Jarred “The Monkey God” Brooks. The climax came when Musumeci secured a triumph via a triangle-armbar submission.
Throughout the submission-only spectacle held at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, Musumeci demonstrated his mastery from the bottom position, primarily operating from his closed guard during the initial minutes.
Employing a series of linked techniques, “Darth Rigatoni” impressively maneuvered into a position to attempt a rear-naked choke on his fellow American adversary. However, a lull in the action prompted the referee to intervene and stand the competitors back up.
Barely moments after returning to their feet, Musumeci found himself once again in his closed guard, energetically launching submissions. His unrelenting pressure and astute grappling strategy culminated in him securing a reverse triangle choke, seamlessly blending it with a simultaneous armbar threat.
Despite Brooks’ commendable efforts to fend off the submission, Musumeci’s display of superior jiu-jitsu technique ultimately compelled the ONE Strawweight MMA World Champion to succumb to the combined triangle-armbar hold at the 7:30 mark of the match.
Regarded by many as the world’s premier pound-for-pound submission grappler, Musumeci continues his unblemished record in ONE Championship, now boasting a 5-0 record in the organization. He has notably submitted two successive opponents, contributing to his remarkable BJJ and submission grappling record of 62-5.
Furthermore, Musumeci’s stranglehold on the ONE Flyweight Submission Grappling World Title remains unbroken, with this year marking his third successful defense of the championship.
In recognition of his remarkable performance, ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong duly awarded Musumeci a performance bonus of US$50,000.
